1----Throughout the story, Nick Carraway experiences entering and observing other people’s lives and problems. All of Nick’s aquaintences are involved in something scandalous. I believe that Nick symbolizes the order and sensibility in the novel, and he is the only one who really “gets it”.

2----Nick Carraway, the novel's narrator, should be urbane, cynical, but also idealistic and genuinely interested in people. But Sam Waterston twists and befouls the character, making Nick a sleazy voyeur who sniffs Daisy's panties and peeps at Gatsby relieving himself on the beach with an idiotic look of arousal on his face. By the end Waterston's narration is reduced to mere heavy breathing, as he keeps repeating the phrases "golden Gatsby" and "beat on, beat on" as if at the edge of climax.

Jay Gatsby, the novel's hero, should be a golden god, handsome and dashing but also with a streak of blue-collar toughness and gangster ruthlessness just under the surface. Robert Redford plays Gatsby as if he's just escaped from the Island of Zombies. Sleepwalking through every scene, Redford makes it look as though Gatsby's "dream" is the literal, out-cold type of snooze, not a vision that fills him with fantastic energy and purpose.

Daisy Buchanan, the glamorous and sexy heroine, should be playful, funny, exuberant, vivacious, charming, and irresistible. Only deep under the surface should you sense weakness, coldness, and cowardice. Mia Farrow plays Daisy as dazed and confused. Instead of looking like a girl who loves to dance on table tops she looks like she's on the edge of passing out cold at the end of every scene. Instead of being a fairy tale princess who comes down from the stars she's like a stiff someone just fished out of the meat locker at the morgue.

Tom Buchanan, the villain, should be a hulking brute. He should look coarse and menacing, muscle-bound and vicious, a gorilla of a man. Bruce Dern looks more like Nick Carraway should look -- lean and thoughtful, not brutal and stupid. The movie has Tom do pointless things to look evil, like stealing a jazz man's trumpet and twisting it into a pretzel shape, or babbling incoherently about Daisy's lust for delivery boys and punching the walls for no reason.

Beyond all this, I can't stress enough the crude, ugly way the director and writer use "obvious" symbols to get their point across. A dead sea gull floating in the water. The jazz man's twisted trumpet lying in the driveway. Sam Waterston clearly not acting as he eyeballs a young Robert Redford in his briefs. Nick's hand snaking into his pocket at Daisy and Gatsby kiss. The literal meaning of every scene is beaten to death, while the actors roll their eyes and try to look insane.

Such a dull, sour film -- one would never guess that the book is full excitement, life and the beauty of dreams.

Example: What does this weird dream I had mean?

I was sitting on a rock at a beach. It was morning time. Sea Gulls were screeching and tourists were meandering about here and there. Suddenly, the rock I was on transformed into the head of a giant. It plunged upwards out of the sand and threw me into the water. People started screaming but I didn't have time to as I was sucked into the water.

The ocean currents were strong and dragged me down swiftly. Instantly, a group of mermen in full suits of Greek-like armor came and grabbed me. The dragged me through the water and tossed me out of their ocean as if they were disgusted with me. I was sailing through the sky and thought It'd go on forever and ever when a swarm of Sea Gulls came and plucked me up with their claws.

They took me through the air and dropped me on a forested island. Before I could catch my breath, the ground exploded around me and the trees turned into Ents like that movie The Lord of the Rings. They picked me up and tossed me off their island. I flew speedily through the air and landed on a mountain. The mountain shuddered as if in fear and split in half dropping me neatly down in the middle.

It was dark only for a minute and I wasn't left alone very long. All too soon, I felt an underwater river pick up my trail. It whisked me away and dumped me off it onto a pile of sand. The sand churned and moved. It flowed like water and carried me to a room of stone filled with gold, silver, and jewels.

Then it fled out of the room and the hole it passed through sealed up. Nothing happened and I nearly jumped for joy. However, it seemed as if nature wasn't through with me for seconds later the treasure in the cave began dumping itself on top of me. I was smothered and getting strangled. As if to make sure it had done a proper job, the stone cave around began breaking up and falling on top of me. Just when I thought I was going to die; I woke up!

Now what in blue blazes does that mean if it means anything? Thanks a ton in advance!

Example: WHAT DOES MY DREAM MEAN!? pleaseee?

i was going to the beach with my cousins, one other mom and her little girl. We walked into the pier, and it had a rail dividing oncoming and outgoing traffic of people, no body respected that though. When we were about getting to the end of the pier where there are shops and restaurants and the middle rail was gone, I see a flock of sea gulls coming toward the crowd and a little boy was taken as prey by 3 or four birds, each carrying it from one extremity of his body. Then, the flock came again but for the little girl I was walking the pier with, she's safe, but now the birds are after me too, they try to take me away but I always seem to somehow manage to not get picked up by the birds...
The people with whom I'm with don't show the most minimal concern about the attacking birds, we then sit down to get something to eat, and then suddenly I'm in my job, (retail store) sitting down and doing my 5 hour shift, the store is gone though, we're just sitting down and some of my friends from High School are my coworkers, some don't know how to use the computer and then suddenly its my time to clock out of the easiest shift ever and I wake up.

Example: Interprate my dream that i had last night?

Example: Anyone care to interpret weird dream? And when I say weird... I mean WEIRD...?

I have a lot of weird dreams, but this one was the weirdest I've had in months. I can't recall every detail, but here's what I remember-

There was an underground city. The populace of the city consisted mostly of people who were kidnapped from above ground. How I got here, I'm not sure, but I don't think I was kidnapped. Anyways, the dream consisted of finding how to escape. I teamed up with a friend of mine who lives three states away to find the device we needed to escape... which was ironically some autographed baseball. Anyways, we found it in some bazaar (there were shops all around this place), unfortunately he wanted to look for something else, so I left for a short time and by the time I got back, he was gone. I searched for several days and found out that a ton of my other friends were there too. I was going to leave with them since they had an autographed baseball too, but I wanted to find my other friend first. Since I couldn't find him by looking I somehow decided that these Sea Gulls (No joke... sea gulls... which accompanied some underground lake) were the key to finding him. I had to locate them three times. Each time I located them, they'd fly away. I found them three times within an hour and this time I noticed that one of them was my dog. How I mistook my dog for a sea gull, I don't know... but I did. Apart from finding my dog, I also found an autographed baseball and while I made my way back to the place we had to go to escape, I realized my other dog was with me too and for some reason I was no longer concerned with finding my friend. I left this underground city and the dream started to kind of unravel. I got attacked by these bears that looked like spider man or something. I don't recall it too well... Then I woke up.

Pretty odd...

If anyone gets anything good outta that, I'll be impressed.

Example: Had a dream of birds staring at me?

I had a dream that I was in some kinda place and a 1 bald eagle 2 white pelicans and 2 white seagulls land near a balcony and they just stare at me and then they fly away what could this mean

Example: Weird dreams anybody?

I had this dream where there was a pIc of a tree and my teacher said we have some interesting people in our class also known as were birds. So this boy I see turns into a hawk and the girl next to me turns into an owl and I turned into a seagull and my teacher says there are only three in our class. Then on the bus I was in the back and I said there's something wrong with me to my friend and she goes what. Then I turn into a seagull and show her and she goes coooool. And I'm like how did I get stuck as a seagull. Anybody have an idea what this means. Please no mean or weird comments

Example: I had a dream about a wave, but I cant find anything on the internet about it?

In my dream (I've dreamed this a few times now) I am on a cliff. I see a sea gull, and I follow it. As I jump to catch it, I fall off the edge of the cliff - but I get an incredible euphoric feeling as I fall. I hit the water, but I make no splash. I am in the water, and a large unbroken wave comes. I am lifted up, and again I get the euphoric feeling, and I feel myself smiling. At the top of the wave, the seagull comes back, and brushes past my shoulder. The wave comes back down, and I go face first into the water. I am now falling again, away from the water, and I fall onto the cliff top again. The dream will start again, the most it has repeated is about three before I wake up, jumping. What does this mean? The first was about a month ago, the last was last night.

Example: Can someone who was born blind, dream?

Can someone who was born blind, dream? If you have never been able to see before, how would you know what anything looked like, to be able to dream about it? My great-grandfather was blind from birth, but he died before I was born, so I never got a chance to know him or ask him.
Opinions?

Example: What is my dream is trying to tell me?

Okay I have looked up pieces of this dream last night and there are so many different points I've confused myself.
Okay it starts out at a bar/club, and I'm rounding everyone up. We leave and it's sunny outside. We all pile into a truck. This truck has been raised and I have to jump to reach the handle. I climb into the passenger side and a total of 4 people are in the front and my child in the back. We are driving down the street to get to the beach. We get out, and as we are walking it turns into a boardwalk. The 1st thing I see are seagulls, then seals. As we are walking towards the boardwalk a storm starts. Tidal waves are hitting us. At the end of the boardwalk I see Seals, Dolphins, and Killer Whales (like sea world, but dolphin size) being thrown at us, and over the boardwalk. Obviously we are soaked but we try taking pictures of this and I climb up onto a pole so I won't be dragged away by the water.
Suddenly the water stops and I climb down to leave. All the water starts to drain and the sea creatures are getting back in the water. I see a seal that looks like it didn't make it and right before I go check it out...
my son steps on me and wakes me up...

Either this is a really weird dream that can't make up it's mind or I'm just going crazy.
If someone can help me on what my dream is trying to tell me that would be great...thanks
